When to Book Airport Advertising Campaigns

When to Book Airport Advertising Campaigns

Airport advertising should usually be booked several weeks or months before the planned campaign start date. The exact lead time depends on the airport, advertising format, campaign size, availability and whether the creative requires production or installation.

For brands planning around a fixed date, such as a product launch, sporting event, conference or peak travel period, booking early is particularly important. High profile airport locations and premium digital formats can have limited availability during busy periods.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Airport Advertising?

There is no single booking window for every airport campaign. As a general planning principle, advertisers should allow more time for campaigns involving multiple airports, large format installations, experiential activity or several creative executions.

A straightforward digital campaign may require less preparation than a large physical installation. However, availability still needs to be confirmed before the campaign can be scheduled.

Planning early also gives advertisers more time to compare airports, terminals and formats rather than selecting from whatever remains available close to the launch date.

Book Earlier for Peak Travel Periods

Demand for airport media can increase around periods when passenger numbers and advertiser activity are higher.

These can include:

  • Summer travel
  • Christmas and New Year
  • Easter
  • Major sporting events
  • International exhibitions and conferences
  • Large cultural and entertainment eventsĀ

Brands targeting these periods should begin planning earlier, particularly when a specific terminal or prominent advertising location is important to the campaign.

For an event led campaign, timing should also reflect when the target audience is likely to arrive, rather than simply when the event begins. If an international conference starts on Monday, for example, relevant delegates may begin arriving several days beforehand.

This is particularly important when planning campaigns around major events, where the most valuable advertising period may begin before the event itself.

Allow Time for Creative Approval and Production

Securing the media space is only one part of the process.

Airport advertising can involve artwork specifications, approval procedures, production and installation requirements. These vary according to the airport, media owner and format.

Large format displays and custom installations generally require more preparation than campaigns using existing digital screens.

Advertisers should therefore build time into the schedule for media selection, availability checks, artwork development, approval, production and installation.

Leaving these stages until shortly before launch can restrict both the media and creative options available.

Match the Campaign Dates to Passenger Behaviour

The best booking period is not always the longest available period.

Campaign timing should reflect when the relevant audience is travelling through the airport.

A tourism campaign may focus on a particular holiday season. A B2B advertiser could concentrate activity around an international trade exhibition. A sports brand may want visibility as supporters, sponsors and commercial partners arrive for a major event.

This is where passenger behaviour should influence both when the campaign runs and when the media needs to be secured. For campaigns extending beyond the terminal, airport activity can also form part of a wider out of home advertising strategy, reaching the audience as they continue their journey into the city.

When Should You Start Planning?

If the campaign has fixed dates or requires specific airport locations, early planning provides more choice.

At OOH International, we recommend starting with four questions:

  • Which airports and terminals reach the target audience?
  • When will that audience be travelling?
  • Which advertising formats suit the campaign?
  • Does the campaign require additional production or approval time?

Once these points are clear, appropriate lead times and media availability can be established for the specific campaign.
